Office

An office building used for professional or commercial purposes but excluding a building for the sale of goods by retail or supply of services to the public. An office building is classified as a Class 5.

Shop

A shop or other building for the sale of goods by retail or the supply of services direct to the public. A Shop is classified as a Class 6.

A Building Permit is required to be lodged with the City of Greater Geraldton to undertake Shop/Office Fitouts. However, some exemptions may apply to the installation of certain equipment. Any building work over $20 000 will require the services of a Registered Building Services Contractor. It is recommended that advice be sought from professional designers and the City of Greater Geraldton Building, Planning and Health Departments.

When to submit a planning application

All land in the City of Greater Geraldton falls under Town Planning Scheme controls, so if you are considering erecting a building or intend using land for a purpose different to its current use please contact the Town Planning Services team first. You may need to lodge a development application and planning approval may need to be obtained before taking any further action.
