Masonry Fence
Any free standing masonry wall located on the side, front or rear boundary will require a building licence. All proposed free standing masonry structures over 750mm are required to be certified by a Structural Engineer.
Retaining Wall
Any retaining wall over 500 mm in height requires a building licence.

Note. It is advisable to contact the Building Department for any inquiries regarding masonry structures. Fences and Retaining walls are classed as 10b structures.

Dividing Fences
Dividing fences are covered by the Dividing fences Act 1961 which deals with your rights and obligations of building and maintaining a dividing fence

When to submit a planning application

All land in the City of Greater Geraldton falls under Town Planning Scheme controls, so if you are considering erecting a building or intend using land for a purpose different to its current use please contact the Town Planning Services team first. You may need to lodge a development application and planning approval may need to be obtained before taking any further action.
