WHEN AND HOW TO BURN

Restricted Burning with a permit is permitted from 15 March to 18 October 2009.

Burning is strictly prohibited from 19 OCTOBER 2009 TO 14 MARCH 2010.

All residential, special rural and Waggrakine General farming properties within the City of Geraldton-Greenough require a permit to burn at ALL times during the restricted burning period.

GENERAL FARMING (OTHER AREAS)
Permits are required for burning of bush, grass or stubble between 7 September and 18 October 2009 and 15 March to 7 April 2010.

Permits can be obtained from the Edward Road office between 8.30am - 1.00pm and 2.00pm or from your local permit issuing officer. When applying for a permit, you will need to provide the lot number and street name of the property for which the permit is to apply.

To prevent smoke nuisance, all material to be burned must be dry & brown, free of any manure, plastics, tyres, chemical containers, green waste and animal carcasses.

HARVESTING REGULATION 38A(1)(2)(3)
A fire fighting appliance with a minimum capacity of 400 litres of water must be situated in any paddock being harvested.

FIRE WEATHER FORECAST
NO BURNING
of any type is permitted on days of VERY HIGH or EXTREME fire danger as issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.

BARBEQUES & INCINERATORS
Gas & electric barbeques are permitted at any time in approved locations. Solid fuel barbeques & approved incinerators are PROHIBITED ON VERY HIGH OR EXTREME FIRE DANGER DAYS.

APPROVED INCINERATOR
The incinerator is to be constructed of steel, brick or a combination of both materials. All incinerators shall be constructed or covered to prevent the emission of sparks or burning material.

PENALTIES

Failure to produce permit to burn $100
Failure to maintain a firebreak as per fire break order $250
Offence relating to lighting a fire in the open $250
Failure of occupier to extinguish a bush fire $250

HINTS FOR BURNING

  • Don’t light a fire on a hot or windy day
  • Don't try to burn more than you can control.
  • Neighbours must be advised.
  • Ensure smoke and sparks will not affect neighbours’ washing or open windows.
  • Cut or rake long grass around trees, buildings & fences before burning.
  • Burn against the wind.
  • Ensure adequate water is on site to dampen down the fire.
  • Burning is not permitted on days of forecast very high or extreme fire danger.

Pursuant to the powers contained in Section 33 of the Bush Fires Act 1954 as amended, you are required to carry out fire prevention work on land owned or occupied by you in accordance with the provisions of this order.

The requirements of this notice are considered to be the minimum standard of fire prevention work required to protect not only individual properties, but the district generally. In addition to the requirements of this Notice, the City may issue separate special orders on owners or occupiers if hazard removal is considered necessary.

VACANT RESIDENTIAL LAND (LOTS UNDER 0.4ha)

BLOCKS MUST BE CLEARED OR SLASHED TO A MAXIMUM HEIGHT OF 7.5CM (NOT PLOUGHED OR ROTARY HOED)

RESIDENTIAL & SPECIAL RURAL LAND (LOTS OVER 0.4ha & LESS THAN 5ha)

FIRE BREAKS MUST BE MINERAL EARTH 3 METRES WIDE OR THE ENTIRE PROPERTY SLASHED TO A MAXIMUM HEIGHT OF 7.5CM

GENERAL FARMING (LOTS OVER 5ha)

MINERAL EARTH FIREBREAKS INSTALLED WITHIN 20 METRES INSIDE AND ALONG THE WHOLE OF EXTERNAL BOUNDARIES

& MAINTAINED CLEAR UNTIL 1 MAY 2009
 

FIREBREAKS MUST BE A MINIMUM OF 3 METRES IN WIDTH AND HAVE A MINIMUM OVERHEAD CLEARANCE OF 3 METRES.

ALL BUILDINGS MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 3 METRE CLEARANCE OF ALL FLAMMABLE MATERIAL.

 

Fire breaks prevent fire from spreading, allow entry for fire fighting vehicles and provide a break from which back burning can take place to control a fire. Fire breaks provide protection and an escape route for fire fighters.

Fire prevention work must be carried out by 6 OCTOBER 2008 or within 14 days of becoming the owner or occupier, should this be after that date. Fire breaks & vegetation height must be maintained throughout the summer months until 1 MAY 2009.

Rangers will inspect all properties from 7 October 2008 to ensure compliance with City`s requirements.

Persons who fail to comply with the requirements of this notice may be issued with an infringement notice or prosecuted.

Where the owner fails to comply with the requirements of this notice, the City may engage a contractor to carry out the required work at the cost of the owner or occupier.

In addition, you may be required to carry out further works, which may be deemed necessary and specified by way of a separate written notice forwarded to the address shown on the City of Geraldton- Greenough rate records for that land.

If it is considered for any reason to be impractical to clear firebreaks as required by this notice, or if natural features render firebreaks unnecessary, you may apply in writing to the City of Geraldton-Greenough no later than 15 September 2008.

FUEL AND/OR GAS DEPOTS
Owners or occupiers of land on which any storage container is used to contain liquid or gas fuel is situated, including land on which any ramp or supports are constructed, you shall have the land clear of all flammable material.
