Dogs within City confines must be on a leash at all times except in off
leash areas.
If a Registration tag is on your dog and your dog becomes lost, we will make
every effort to contact you if the dog has been found.
If your dog is given away, dies or is sold you must notify Council with
details of the new owner within 28 days.
Nuisance
Nuisance dogs are those that are persistent barkers, constantly wandering
or dangerous to the health of someone.
Anyone may complain that your dog is a nuisance.
If a dog is found attacking livestock, in an enclosed paddock or yard, the
owner of the livestock may destroy the dog. Likewise, if a dog is not
claimed within 72 hours of impoundment, Council may destroy, sell or give
the dog away. If the dog is wearing a registration tag, all attempts will be
made to notify the latest recorded owner.
You must pick up any excrement from your dog that is in a public place.
Local Laws allow Councils to penalise owners of dogs who allow them to
excrete on public land.
Control
If you have a dog you must ensure that the fences and gates at the
property where the dog is kept are sufficient to prevent the dog from
getting out.
Dogs are not allowed to wander the streets. If they do they will be picked
up by the Ranger and impounded. You will have to pay for the release of your
dog out of the pound. Rangers may enter property to seize a dog which has
been wandering at large.
Dogs must be kept on a leash (not longer than 2 metres) in all public
places. Whilst walking your dog on a leash you must be capable of
controlling it.
Even in ‘prescribed exercise areas’ where dogs may be let off leashes, the
dog must be under your ‘effective control’. This means you must have the
leash with you and be able to restrain the dog and put the leash back on if
necessary.
