Seniors Week was hailed a resounding success last week,
with more than 1000 seniors supporting events hosted by the City of
Geraldton-Greenough Seniors Week Committee.
On Thursday the Queen Elizabeth II Seniors and Community Centre was packed to
the rafters with more than 150 people taking advantage of “Soup and Sandwiches”
for lunch, sponsored by Geraldton’s Picadilly Dance Club.
The dance club served bowls of steaming soup made by members Jan Burns, Joy
Thomas, Neil Blackmore and Pat Parker; and plates of perfectly presented
sandwiches, also made by members.
The diners then danced it all off to music by DJ Ron Jones.
Coordinator of QEII Seniors and Community Centre, Rosetta Finlay said she was
overwhelmed with the support shown by seniors.
“We have had record crowds for events,” she said. “The mayor’s mystery tour saw
200 people hop on board.”
City of Geraldton-Greenough Mayor Ian Carpenter said he was pleased with the
number of seniors who went on the mystery tour last Monday.
“I was very pleased with the number of seniors who undertook the Mayor’s Mystery
Tour and their keen interest in the many projects under way in
Geraldton-Greenough,” he said.
“I believe the City has a much under-used asset in terms of the experience our
seniors bring, so I’m always very interested to hear their points of view.”
Cr Carpenter said the seniors understanding of local issues and projects was
demonstrated at a morning tea question and answer session after the mystery
tour, hosted by Cr Carpenter.
“The questions put to the City CEO, directors and me at the Q&A session
certainly demonstrates our seniors have a good understanding of the current
issues and projects in our area,” he said.
Oakajee Port and Rail’s Manager Community and Public Relations, Kim Pervan, gave
a short presentation at the morning tea and donated $500 towards Seniors’ Week
activities.
