EXHIBITION PROGRAMME:

Feature Exhibitions

Nalda Searles – “Drifting in My Own Land”

From 24th September to 29th November

An Art on the Move touring exhibition

A powerful expression of identity in relation to our unique Western Australian social landscape. This exhibition is an expression of identity in relation to physical and social landscapes. Searles has drawn on her own life, memories of her parents and the experiences of numerous regional women she has known in the gradual development of the 21 works on view.
They make some of the most haunting poetic statements to emerge from Western Australia’s fibre textile sculpture movement and include a grass skull, stately kangaroo – headed figures, a vessel woven from the artists own hair and a salvaged pram watched over by a flock of grass birds

Nalda Searles – Drifting in My Own Land provides insight into the vision of one of Western Australia’s unique and evocative practitioners.

“A Different Time” The Expedition photographs of Herbert Basedow 1903 – 1928

From 24th September to 29th November

A travelling exhibition developed and presented by National Museum of Australia Canberra

The Majority of the photographs presented in ‘A Different Time: The Expedition Photographs of Herbert Basedow 1903-1928 are on display for the first time. The National Museum of Australia’s photography team spent several months digitizing Basedow’s negatives and glass lantern slides to give visitors the rare opportunity to experience this important Australian story.
Like many travellers, Herbert Basedow used photography to document his expeditions. While Basedow took photographs of landscapes and rock formations, he also captured early twentieth century aboriginal life in some very remote areas of Australia. Basedow took photographs and collected artifacts on 12 major geological, exploratory and medical relief expeditions and a number of smaller trips into central and northern Australia between 1903 and 1928.
Photographs from the exhibition can also be viewed on the National Museum of Australia’s web site
www.nma.gov.au/exhibitions.

The Love Survey
by local artists Gera Woltjer and Gabrielle Woodhams
24th September to 25th October
CLOSING SOON

The original concept for “The Love Survey” was inspired by “The Love Letter”, an intimate genre painting by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. Artists Gera Woltjer & Gabrielle Woodhams then researched the history of the love letter, through art, literature and movies, and came up with the exciting idea of the love letter survey.

The Community was asked to be brave and record stories of their love correspondence. From these stories the artwork evolved. Sharing a love for textiles, the wonderful text from the surveys gave the artists a rich foundation to stimulate their imaginations, and an exhibition of performance, video and installation eventuated.

Coming Soon

Guess who's Coming to Dinner?
by local artists Roxanne Grant and Gemma Allen from 30.10 to 29.11.

To begin with on the 30th, Gemma and Roxanne will be in an empty gallery! This exhibition is different because the creation of the artworks will be totally reliant upon the general pubic who are invited to come to the Gallery and pose for portraits. These portrait sessions will occur every day for the duration of the exhibition. So unlike most exhibitions it will take shape only when the public participate. These portraits will become the exhibition.

The artists have secured Andrea Selvey, Director of Creative Communities from the City of Geraldton-Greenough as their first sitter!! Both Gemma and Roxanne hope to target as large a cross section of the local community as possible so come in and take part!

“We are both out of our comfort zones, me because I am so used to working with multi media installations and Gemma because she usually paints and draws alone” states Roxanne.

The closing of the exhibition will be unique in that Gemma and Roxanne will be selling tickets to the event! A banquet! The lucky dinners will have a chance to taste some great food and wine and experience the installation completed and maybe go home with part of the artwork!

Year 12 Perspectives 2008
Dates are 2nd October – 6th December

The Geraldton Regional Art Gallery is proud to present “Year 12 Perspectives 2008” showcasing the creative and technical talents of West Australian Year 12 TEE Art and Design students who graduated in 2008.

Year 12 Perspectives is an initiative of the Art Gallery of WA and is held on an annual basis. This year, for the first time, the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery has negotiated the rights to exhibit a selection of the original 56 works including representation from five students from the Geraldton Grammar School and Nagle Catholic College.

Each and every work is of the highest possible calibre and they provide an insight into the ideas, issues and concerns facing young West Australians as they make their first tentative steps into the world and outside of school grounds.

Year 12 Perspectives represents the very best of artistic and technical talents from students scattered throughout Western Australia.
