ABOUT US
Located in the heart of Geraldton, the Geraldton Regional
Art Gallery opened on 6th August 1984 and is housed in the former Town Hall
which operated from 1907 to 1964.
Renovations completed in 1984 saw the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery become the
first regional ‘A’ class venue in Western Australia and in 1997 the building was
listed on the State Register of Heritage Places in Western Australia.
The Geraldton Regional Art Gallery is jointly funded and operated by the City of
Geraldton-Greenough and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. The Gallery houses
and cares for the City of Geraldton-Greenough Art Collection which is comprised
of over 404 artworks, principally paintings and works on paper.
The City Collection was initiated in 1949 with a bequest of 44 artworks to the
then Town of Geraldton by Western Australian philanthropist, the late Sir Claude
Hotchin. The collection today boasts works by local and West Australian
contemporary artists as well as historically significant works by Norman
Lindsay, Rolf Harris, Robert Juniper, Howard Taylor, Hans Heysen, Elizabeth
Durack and more.
The Gallery’s “A” classification allows for an annual schedule of some 25
exhibitions of the highest calibre accessed from local, state, national and
international sources.
The Gallery aims to meet the artistic and cultural needs of Geraldton-Greenough
and Mid West residents as well as state, national and international visitors.
The Gallery conducts a variety of education and workshop programs, plus outreach
educational and community services across the city and region.
