 ART GALLERY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Founded in Perth in 1895 with the purchase of the nucleus
of an art collection by the Perth Museum, the Art Gallery of Western Australia
was opened as part of the museum by Sir Alexander Onslow, administrator of the
colony, on 31 July 1895. Today the Gallery is home to one of the State’s
greatest assets, the State Art Collection.
The State Art Collection provides a rich array of compelling and powerful works
of art, which inspire and challenge us all. The State Art Collection comprises
over 16,500 works in a range of media including paintings, sculptures, craft and
design, watercolours, drawings, photographs and prints. Indigenous art is a
highlight, providing an extensive overview of traditional and contemporary art
from Western Australia, the Central Desert and Arnhemland. The Collection also
has pre-eminent holdings of Western Australian art, craft and design from 1829
to the present and boasts works by Frederick McCubbin, John Longstaff, Julie
Dowling, Auguste Rodin, Lucian Freud, Hans Heysen plus many other greatest
artists.
The Art Gallery of Western Australia aims to be a focal point and a destination
of excellence in the visual arts that contributes regionally, nationally and
internationally to a dynamic living culture in Western Australia. A significant
part of this overarching commitment includes the Gallery’s support of the
Geraldton Regional Art Gallery.
